When you're buying a horse out of the Patrick Payne stables you know it's had the best education a horse can have, being in the hands of exceptionally good conditioners.​ Takebloodstock sold horses out of the stable have done very well in recent times. They include; Zebedee Springs, Funnyifitwon, Lily Allez, The Ineos, Babu King, Marcolt, Need A Miracle, Duke Of Wellington, Secret Location, Major Makeover, Pop Quiz, Eddy Street, Warrandyte Road, Pub Crawl, Stepchild, Lang Park,
Itwasonlyakiss (IRE), En Primeur, Tee Galleria, Sasterion etc. If we went back further the list would just keep going!

• What we have on offer here is a lovely four-year-old maiden gelding by Written By, who has had 12 starts for 4 TOP 3 placings, 2x 4ths and 1x 5th. He is arguably unlucky to still be a maiden, but that also gives a new owner the opportunity to get that elusive maiden win out of the way and hopefully go on with it.


• He commenced his racing career in June 2025, and the form around some of his early races has proven to be quite solid, with numerous horses going on to win races from the events he contested. On debut at Swan Hill in the $125,000 VOBIS Gold Elvstroem Classic, a two-year-old 1300m Open race, four horses have since gone on to win.


• He then contested a 1000m maiden at Ballarat on 19 September 2025. Since then, 10 horses from that race have gone on to win, again highlighting the strength of the form around the race.


• Pierre Le Quill has also hit the line hard on several occasions and has had his share of things not going his way. A good example was his second placing at Echuca on 4 November last year, where the race report noted that he drifted wider towards the top of the straight before storming home and diving late, just missing out. Six horses from that race have subsequently won.


• In December, he finished fifth and sixth in two separate races on the 2nd and 14th respectively, with three horses subsequently winning from the first race and another two from the second.


• He was then tipped away before returning in 2026, finishing fourth first-up on 23 May at Echuca over 1100m. Five horses from that race have subsequently won. He then returned to Swan Hill on 5 June and finished fourth again, after being heavily bumped at the start. One horse from that race has since won.


• Towards the end of June, he contested a 1400m race at Pakenham on the synthetic. He had to ease out wider and did make ground later in the race. It was his first run on the synthetic, and despite that, the losing margin wasn’t significant at around 4.4L. Two horses from that race have subsequently won.


• His last two starts have been particularly encouraging. On 5 September at Mildura, he finished second in a 1400m maiden, hitting the line strongly over the final 200 metres and making good ground, although he was unable to go with the winner. He then went to Echuca on 19 September over 1300m and finished third, battling solidly and fighting hard before being unable to close the gap over the final 175m. He was beaten 2.75 lengths.


• Usually, you’re buying a horse that has shown form and then gone out of form. In this particular case, Pierre Le Quill seems to have found his form in his last few starts and is showing a good zest for racing around the Victorian circuits. He looks primed to continue racing well in those weaker Victorian races, while I think a move interstate could potentially see him find a whole new lease of life and give him the opportunity to get that elusive win and perhaps go on with it.


• His latest gear change was on 19 August, with blinkers added, and the comment was that he had worked in blinkers. Gone well all surfaces to date.
